Handel’s Messiah

December 2, 2018 - 3:30 pm

West Point Cadet Chapel

This year we are presenting the 60th annual Handel’s Messiah at West Point Cadet Chapel!  I really hope you will choose to be a part of this wonderful annual tradition.  In line with what I have tried to do with 5 year anniversaries after the 50th anniversary, we will present as a chorus “Worthy Is the Lamb/Blessing and Honor/AMEN” which concludes Part III (along with some of the celebrated Part III arias).  Please note we will sing all of Part I and then jump to portions of Part III, including the “Worthy Is the Lamb” chorus – then conclude with “Hallelujah” Chorus.  That may seem strange, but some members of the audience complained last time when the “Hallelujah” did not end the concert, so I am just treating it as a “programmed encore.”

The concert is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.  Like previous years, dress rehearsal will be conducted the day of the performance – at 2:15 pm.  We will not be able to run all the choruses at that time but will run the most difficult choruses and parts of others.  We will conclude at 3:00 so that there is a break for refreshments, restroom and lining up.  Choristers may use any edition you have on hand, though cues will be provided from G. Schirmer.  Also, I will have extra G. Schirmer copies if people need.

Dress will be black and white (or dark and light) – dark skirts and light blouses for women; and dark suits (or sports jackets) with white shirts and dark ties for men.

Thank you for your hearts and voices.

Craig Williams

Cathedral Choir's contribution to the West Point performance has been well respected and highly spoken of by the conductor.  In the past, we have been prominently featured by having the entire center rear section completely reserved for our members.  However, our numbers have dwindled in recent years and last year were insufficient to warrant reserved seating.  Let's turn that around for this 60th year.  Please encourage your friends and section-mates in the choir to attend and let's make this a banner year for attendance.
